 Breakers' baby boom

Breakers' baby boom

23/11/2008 1:00:01 AM

SCHOOL'S out and it's time to get stuck into representing NSW. We're not talking about the men's team, which last week defeated New Zealand with a Baby Blues XI. This is the Baby Breakers, the women's squad which features four players who just completed their HSC.

Ellyse Perry, who also represents Australia in football, Alyssa Healy, the niece of former Test keeper Ian Healy, Ashleigh Endacott and Sarah Coyte, younger sister of Blues squad member Scott, represent not only the remarkable youthfulness of the Breakers but the potential of women's cricket in NSW.

Perry, Healy and Endacott were each involved in international series during the HSC. Endacott and Healy played for the Australia Under-21s, who played warm-up games against India and Australia, while Perry played for the senior side. Each had to balance their cricket and schooling and are glad they can now put all their energy into their sport.

"I enjoyed my time at school, it was very rewarding - but it's a massive relief that the exams are over," Perry said. "We worked out that I missed 75 days of school this year. It was a busy year and it made it difficult to keep up. But I was very lucky because I had great support."

Perry has travelled with the Australian cricket and football teams this year.

"My parents and I had the view that these sporting trips might only come along once, so it's better to make the most of it and go on every tour. Around final exam time though I did cut back to give myself the best chance of doing well."

Perry said it was great to have teammates going through a similar experience.

"Everyone would discuss how they balanced everything," she said. "It was cool to have four of us doing the HSC at the same time and to know that you weren't alone."

The sentiment was echoed by Healy, who said she was happy with the way she balanced school, study and cricket.

"I felt like I was able to put everything into my studies and luckily I didn't miss as much school this year as I thought I would," Healy said. "It was comforting to have teammates going through the same thing, to bounce ideas off."

The Breakers begin their season on Saturday against Queensland Fire in Brisbane. Healy and Perry have been named in the team.
