Lights, camera, action!

THERE was a touch of Hollywood at South Durras this week when a film crew arrived to shoot scenes for a short feature film.

The cast and crew of Lightswitch spent time on the beach, headland and jetty filming major scenes for the 22-minute movie.

The film is an original idea with a Thelma and Louise styled road trip of self-discovery between two women.

Co-producers and writers Natalie Krikowa and Penny Glasswell faced some less than desirable conditions on Tuesday but were optimistic about their film’s progress.

“It is the first film we have done with a big crew. We’ve been doing it for years and years,” Miss Krikowa said.

“It is very fortunate we have the community on board with it.”

The location was chosen for the film to avoid the hassles of having to physically shut down larger areas in cities like Sydney and the Gold Coast.

The producers said that the location would also add a different look to their film in contrast to other short films that looked the same.

The first screening of the film will be in Los Angeles next February. The producers hope that the initial debut will be screened twice and then toured around the world at other film

festivals.

But the film-making duo have bigger plans for the feature.

“We hope to pitch for future TV series,” Miss Krikowa said.

“The way it ends leaves it open. We had that in mind as well. It’s ultimately like a pilot episode.”

It is hoped the short film will be an opportunity for its two main actors to gain coverage and move forward in their careers.

Ex-Home and Away actress Kylie Watson and Lara Dignam attended auditions for the roles and were selected from a competitive group of over 100 applicants.

“We knew Kylie’s work from Home and Away. She is everything we imagined,” Miss Glasswell said.

“Lara was perfect and gelled really well with Kylie. This will be show-casing the actors’ talents.”

Miss Watson and her co-star Miss Dignam faced some less than desirable weather conditions while on set but enjoyed the opportunity of working somewhere new.

“It is unspoiled and laid back here,” Miss Watson said.

The pair started work in the early hours on Tuesday morning catching a sunrise in South Durras.

The two actors were given the challenge of presenting on-screen chemistry in a way that has no political undertones. Both saw it as an opportunity of playing roles that were new and different.

“I’m playing a lesbian role and it is non-political driven,” Miss Watson said.

“I think it will contribute to lack of quality gay films out there.”

“The story is character-driven. There’s not a lot of dialogue. I was intrigued by what this all would be about. I’ve never played a gay role before,” Miss Dignam said.

Both actors said that the story line was not based around the character’s sexuality but more the physical and emotional journeys they have through the 22- minute film.

The film shoot concluded in South Durras and Batemans Bay yesterday and will continue in Canberra until November 23.
